I was granted an exclusive interview with none other than Yen Hoang herself! Here is a summary of our transcript, edited for readability:
Tucson: So, you placed first four times in a row! How does it feel?
Yen: I feel good. But actually, the placement isn't what counts. What counts is the finishing time. This is the Paralympic Team Trials, after all.
The "A Standard" is the benchmark used by Team USA to determine who goes to Paris. They divide my time by the A Standard. If I'm at 100%, then I'm guaranteed to go. If I'm at 95%, then I have a very good chance of making it. At 91%, I'm not optimistic.
T: But 91% is still very good!
Y: Yes. It is very good. And I know I did my best, which is what is most important to me.
T: Yes absolutely. It's very impressive. So do they only take the top 3 fastest people?
Y: They take the 26 fastest people!
T: You could be one of them!
Y: It's possible. But I kinda doubt it. As of today, I am number 25. There are still events tomorrow, so I will likely be bumped down, but we'll see. I did everything in my control and now I am just going to cheer on my teammates.
T: That's awesome. I'm glad you're a good sportswoman and a teammate. When do we find out if you made the team?
Y: Well I find out on Sunday at 8:30am. But the general public will get the announcement at 9:30am.
Well that's it for today folks. Tune in next time for more.
